Mere hug on Karvachoth led woman to face rape, separation from husband

New Delhi: A 28-year-old woman had to face the plight of repeated rape and then separation from her husband, merely for a hug, she made with her old family friend on the auspicious day of karvachoth. The man took it as a signal from the lady whose husband was living abroad for his job.

A man committed rape on her and filmed the entire incident. He threatened to release the video clipping to her family and made her face sexual assault for months.  When her husband got the suspicion about this illicit relation, he removed his wife from the home.

Taking a grim view on crime against women, Delhi court sentenced a rigorous imprisonment of 10 years to the man. Court also imposed a fine of rupees 30 thousand on the convict, out of which 20 thousand will be given to the victim as a compensation.

Fast track court Judge Shail Jain said due to the conduct of the accused the matrimonial life of the lady had been shattered. She was removed from the matrimonial home. Convict Shambhu Jha plead leniency on the ground that it was a consensual relation between the two. Hug and smile on karvachoth day were clearly an inducement on her part. She showed that she was interested in the relation in the absence of her husband.

To this court said it showed the trust and confidence she showed on him. Convict betrayed it by sexually assaulting her. Committing the crime against a woman after winning the trust of her family is an unpardonable offense.

According to police,  Shambhu Jha is a photographer by profession. The Family of the accused use to take Shambu’s  assistance in the family function. Shambhu’s relation with the girl’s family was familiar. After the marriage of the victim, he kept contacting her. Both were good friend earlier. The crime was committed in July 2011 when she was alone at her matrimonial home.
